3: Learning Highlights

Prep class had their first art class of the semester and they learned a little bit about finger paintings and decorated their mural with their favorite colors.

They also displayed the PLG’s while working with their houses to create a building.

Grade 1 has started their BrainWave unit that teaches how the brain works, and how we, as individuals learn best.

To begin, the students made a paper chain that represents the power of Collaboration and the interconnectedness of the different parts of the brain that work together to facilitate learning. To expand on this concept, they sat in a circle holding one word each and connected one word to another with yarn. The result represented a web of connectivity and demonstrated that our brains learn successfully when connections are made.

They also created art that represents a Memory or a Dream!

Grade 2 focused on building their teamwork and collaboration. They had to identify a problem and find solutions together!

For Brainwave, Grade 3 learned the importance of training our minds to respond in a healthy way when our emotions are triggered. They learned that we need to have a protocol in place to regulate our emotions especially when we are upset. The learners understood that it is very hard for us to think logically when our emotions are at the peak and that emotional regulation is required.

They also went to Beach this morning for Maths and collaboratively worked to collect and count up to 100 coral.

Grade 5 learners did wonderfully in their Brainwaves research, recording and reflection task this week. They had to collaborate to research what metacognition is, and record how they will use metacognition strategies to improves their skills of choice.

For their reflection task, students considered the best approaches that they use or know about when it comes to managing stress, and shared their advice via sticky notes to their "Extra Classmate" - Jeff.

Grade 6 went from creating their own adventures as a way of understanding conceptual thinking (Big Ideas), to designing and dropping their own self-made "medical" dropbox's from the 3rd floor before quietly reflecting on all they had learned, how it linked to the Big Idea, their challenges and their successes. They then went on to do Human Bingo and finished the day sharing positives about each other. Their Big Idea was: Finding out new things is a human driver and affects things for better or worse.

8th grade students worked on creating art work that represents their identity:

First Language English class, learners were introduced to essential reading strategies. They practiced these strategies through engaging station activities and by reflecting on what they had read in the past 24 hours. Learners shared their reading experiences, discussed the content, and compared their choices with one another.

G10/11 Global Studies class were tasked in their house to create a prompt that applies to global issues or debates. They needed to comment on other prompts and give reasons why they would agree or not. An awesome Entry Activity for perspectives and debates.
