3: International Culture Day 2026: Celebrating Cultures Around the World
Our school community came together for a vibrant and exciting International Culture Day 2026, where students showcased traditions, music, dance, and storytelling from cultures around the world. The event highlighted the creativity, teamwork, and cultural learning that students explored throughout the second semester.
The performances began with Prep’s energetic American dance to Cotton Eye Joe, followed by Grade 8’s radio drama that guided the audience through the cultures and landmarks of the United Kingdom.
Grade 1 Maroon performed the traditional French dance The Chimes of Dunkirk, while Grade 7 took the audience on a time-travel journey through historical India. Grade 1 Blue then brought the beauty of Chinese tradition to the stage with a colorful Lantern Folk Dance.
Grade 4 energized the crowd with a lively performance inspired by Waka Waka, celebrating unity, culture, and sport. Personally, I was impressed that they recognized the controversy behind the Shakira song and paid tribute to the original Zangalewa from Cameroon by editing it into the song!
During the break, families also had the opportunity to visit the High School Ryukyuan Culture Exhibition, where students from Grades 9–12 proudly shared projects and activities connected to Okinawan traditions.
The second half of the event featured Grade 6’s powerful Soran Bushi fisherman’s dance from Japan, Grade 2 Maroon’s joyful Jamaican ring games and folk dances, and Grade 5’s fun Australian-inspired Koala Nuttbush performance.
Grade 7 returned with a presentation exploring modern India, while Grade 8 celebrated the regions and traditions of Japan through handmade dioramas.
Grade 2 Blue performed a graceful Hawaiian hula dance, and Grade 3 closed the class performances with a beautiful Korean fan dance inspired by Arirang.
The event concluded with a powerful Okinawan Eisa performance by students from Grades 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12. After months of practice under the guidance of Ryukyu Kajimaya, students proudly demonstrated this important Okinawan cultural tradition through synchronized drumming and dance.
International Culture Day 2026 was a wonderful celebration of global learning, creativity, and community spirit. We are incredibly proud of all of our students and thankful to the families and staff who helped make the event such a memorable experience.
Please enjoy some photo highlights from the event!
The Coral Class is currently learning about different countries around the world also!🌎✨
They learned about Mexico by making tacos and enjoying face painting inspired by traditional Mexican festivals!
Thank you and stay safe if the typhoon comes to Okinawa!
