2: Curriculum Focus - Research Tasks
In the last blog, we had an opportunity to explore the next step of the Process to Facilitate Learning after the Entry Point - the Knowledge Harvest. After the Knowledge Harvest, students start to work their way through the tasks that make up the bulk of a unit - the Subject Learning Activities. These activities are a mini cycle within the flow of the unit and contain three types of tasks.
Research Activities
Recording Activities
Reflection Activities
The Subject Learning Activities always begin with a research activity. These activities are designed to make sure that children can access information in ways that are appropriate to them, drawing on a wide range of approaches such as role-play, digital learning, interviews, library research and so on. IPC research activities are experiential and exploratory. Some are collaborative; others are designed to develop individual enquiry and resilience, along with other personal goals. These tasks help the brain to learn knowledge, skills and understanding.
In Grade 2:
In our current G2 unit, "Travel & Tourism", each student selected a country to research and identified four cities they would like to visit. They also discovered the name of the currency used in that country, explored four traditional foods they would like to try, and listed eight souvenirs they would buy. This activity fostered individual inquiry and resilience, as students delved into various aspects of their chosen country.
In Grade 7: Students have been learning about informal writing, and they engaged in a research task where they examined unpunctuated letters. They shared insights about the Big Idea: "When information is shared accurately and clearly, the end result is more effective," particularly in the context of written communication. The students corrected the letters, which highlighted the importance of grammar, mechanics, and usage. The students explored the components of informal letters and created their own letters to share with their parents for recording task.
Next week we will continue exploring the Subject Learning Activities through the lens of Recording activities.
3: Learning Highlights - G1, G6, and High School!
First graders are getting hands-on experience in Design class, building cardboard bird feeder houses for their IPC unit, "Live and Let Live." This project helps them learn the importance of precise measurement and marking as they practice these skills while safely using the available tools to cut their materials.
Grade 6 continued in Geography with data analysis and conclusion. They looked at a variety of graphs etc. and in groups the students created examples. Here you can also see a clear example of the learning goals and how we build in differentiation and challenge using the Student Rubrics.
Our High Schoolers have been hunting for treasures - the treasures known as collaboration, communication, thinker and content mastery by completing a scavenger hunt about South America! They participated in this activity before potentially making a scavenger hunt themselves as part of their ongoing projects on the Living World 🌎
